Is resurfacing better than a false ceiling?

False ceilings are an old fashioned way to deal with textured surfaces. Resurfacing is modern and has many advantages.

Disadvantages of a false ceiling:

False ceilings require drilling
Loss of ceiling height
Poorer quality
Strata approval required

Advantages of a resurfaced ceiling:

No loss of ceiling height
No hammer drilling or attachments
Superior quality
No Strata approval required

Disadvantages of a false ceiling:

False ceilings require drilling several cm’s into the concrete risking hitting electrical cables and plumbing. Hundreds of plugs need to be drilled to attach the battens but there isn't way of knowing where the existing cables and pipes are.

Loss of ceiling height will make your home feel smaller. False ceilings will reduce the ceiling height by 5-10cm which significantly impacts the feeling of spaciousness.

Poorer quality. Unless expensive cranes are engaged, much shorter sheets of plasterboard are used as normal sized sheeting cannot be carried up stairwells and lifts. The result is more joints that can be seen at different times of the day and night and more likelihood of cracking.

Strata approval required. False ceilings are a structural alteration to the building and always require strata approval. If a bylaw doesn’t already exist, strata will likely require you to have one made at an annual meeting.

Advantages of a resurfaced ceiling:

No loss of ceiling height. Not only does resurfacing NOT lower your ceiling height, it makes your ceilings feel higher once the texture disappears.

No hammer drilling or attachments. Rather than constructing a new structure, resurfacing is a process that changes the existing surface. It is not just a render over the top either. It is a true resurfacing process that converts the existing texture into a beautiful smooth surface.

Superior quality. Even the best plasterboard ceilings are only a ASNZ Level 4 finish unless you pay considerable more money to upgrade them. Resurfaced ceilings are a ASNZ Level 5 quality finish, meaning regardless of day or night, you won’t see ugly plaster joints or screw holes, just a smooth surface.

No Strata approval required. In almost all cases, strata won’t require any special approvals. If strata has any questions or concerns, our experienced technical support teams will be happy to liaise with your strata manager.

An amazing transformation I recently engaged Ceiling Resurfacing to cover the popcorn ceiling in a 2 bedroom unit. Paul, Estaban and the team are professional, quick and great at working around particularities that come along with different properties or different scheduling of works. If the prices work within your budget I think you'll get every penny's worth. My ceilings started off rough and ugly (curse the 80's!) and came out smooth and level, ready for painting! They also patch up any holes any electricians may need to make.

Do you guarantee your work?

Yes. In fact we have never had to return to repair a ceiling. As we apply our products at very high pressure, we get excellent adhesion. Once completed it results in an industry high Level 5 finish – the highest quality finish for a plastered ceiling.

How long does ceiling resurfacing take?

For small units we can generally finish in 2 days, but larger ones will take 3-4 days.
